Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School
At Heronswood, we strive to make the time our children spend at school as fun, exciting, engaging and as memorable as possible. We recognise that children learn best when they have an emotional connection to the activities they are participating in. We do this through a stimulating, vibrant curriculum but also by bringing in outside people and by taking the children out on trips and visits.
Please see our Facebook Page - Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School for our most recent updates since May 2025.

This week in Reception we introduced our new key text in
Literacy: The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler.
We discussed new vocabulary from the text, learned BSL signs to help us retell the story and even got a special video visit from Axel & Julia Donaldson as part of this weeks World Book Day celebrations!
We heard Julia's new story and even saw Axel Scheffler creating some of his illustrations.
As Historians, Year 1 explored the life of Florence Nightingale.
During Children's Mental Health Week, Year 3 have been exploring this year's theme 'Let's Connect' . We looked at who we make connections with and activites we enjoy with these people. #childrensmentalhealthweek2023 #letsconnect #PSHE
This week the authors and illustrators in Reception have been innovating our key text 'Mr Gumpy's Outing'. We have also shared 'Mr Gumpy's Motor Car' and started to think about the structure of John Burningham's stories.
We mind mapped other types of transport Mr Gumpy could use and started to create our own story sequences. We recognised Mr Gumpy always gets into some kind of trouble so we added that to our story sequences.
We have been really impressed witht the children's ideas.
Have a lovely half term

As Artists, Year 4 have been exploring a range of painting techniques.
As Designers, Year 5 have been exploring how fresh and dried herbs alter the flavour of a tomato sauce. We tried using fresh parsley, coriander and basil, as well as dried parsley, coriander and oregano. The children then described the flavours and chose their favourites.
As artists, Year 4 have been looking at examples of Van Gogh's work and exploring his style and techiques in their own creative way.
As Scientists, Year 1 tested the properties of different materials.
In DT, Year 3 have been exploring different types of carbohydrates. We taste tested rice, couscous, wholemeal bread, oats and potatoes. We looked carefully at the different methods of cooking these. Which carbohydrate is your favourite?
