Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Our class teachers are Mrs Jackson and Miss Hyland. Our teaching assistants are Mrs Childe, Miss Burkett, Mrs Barker and Miss Smith (Tuesdays). Mrs Thomson and Mrs Jones teach on Thursday mornings. Ms Fleming teaches in Mrs Jackson's class (1G) on Mondays.

In our class the rules and expectations are built around the core values of our school.

We also use Class Dojo to celebrate children's achievements in demonstrating these values and behaviours.

English Information

Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries. It is a whole school expectation that children read at least five times per week - please remember to sign diaries once children have read and we will change their books. We teach reading through Phonics lessons every day.

Maths Information

The focus of mathematics teaching in Year 1 is to ensure that children become increasingly fluent with whole numbers – working numbers between 0 to 20, and being able to count forwards and backwards to 100. Also including recalling number facts to 10 and the concept of place value. This should ensure that children develop efficient visual representation of what numbers look like and what is there value. Children should also develop their ability to solve a range of problems and develop mathematical reasoning. By the end of Year 1, pupils should begin to be fluent counting in groups of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and be able to use these in a variety of situations.

PE and Kit Information

Our PE day is a Thursday morning.  It is really important that the children come into school a suitable PE kit in school on our PE days so that they can participate fully in the activities.

The PE kit is as follows:

Navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper and trainers.  (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer) . All items of the PE kit should be clearly labelled and kept in a PE bag with the child’s name on the outside.

Welly Wednesdays

Every Wednesday the children will be going to forest school in the afternoon. Children need to come into school in their own clothes full-length leggings/ trousers. Forest school can be muddy and wet so please bring them in clothes that can get a bit messy. On forest school days it is important children have got coats as we like to go out whatever the weather. A pair of welly boots should remain in school.

Homework and Reading

Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult. All children will have an Oxford Owl log in and this resource can be used at home to access assigned reading books. They will also have a Seesaw account where each week Phonics homework and personalised Phonics pathways will be shared. Please ensure you access these as they are essential in supporting your child to learn to read. All children will also have a NumBots log in to practice Maths fluency.
