Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School

Year 5 RL

Welcome to Year 5 RL

Our class teachers are Mrs Lynch (Monday – Wednesday) and Miss Rodd (Thursday and Friday).  In addition, our teaching assistants are Miss Hussey and Mrs Fenton.

In our class the rules and expectations are built around the core values of our school.

English Information

Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of age-appropriate texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries and each week we award one child as reader of the week. It is a whole school expectation that children read five times per week, for approximately 15 minutes each time. We teach reading through Guided Reading sessions in school each day where we spend time reading and analysing texts as a whole class.

Maths Information

The principal focus of Mathematics teaching in Year 5 is to ensure that children become increasingly fluent with whole and decimal numbers, fractions, the four operations, geometry and statistics. Children will develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately. Children should also develop their ability to solve a range of problems and develop mathematical reasoning. By the end of Year 4, pupils should be fluent with times tables up to the 12s, so they should be able to use these in a variety of situations in Year 5, as they underpin most units in Maths.

Discrete Maths lessons are taught on a daily basis although Maths is linked to topic where possible. Children also complete a quick Maths session each day which enables them to practise key skills.

P.E. and Kit Information

Our P.E. day is a Friday and children should come to school wearing their kit on this day.

It is really important that children wear suitable P.E. kit to school on our P.E. day so that they can participate fully in the activities.

The P.E. kit is as follows:

Navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper and trainers.  (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer)

Children should remove earrings for lessons or alternatively provide tape to cover them.

Homework

Spellings will be set every Thursday on Spelling Shed for the children to complete at home. In addition, each week children will have one piece of English set in the CGP book and one piece of Maths homework on Seesaw.

Homework will be set on a Thursday and is expected back on the following Tuesday. The children will also need to revise the times tables by heart to use in their Maths work this year. Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult. It is really important that with all homework the children are encouraged to complete it independently but then supported when necessary.

Unlocking Learning

All children have a Times Tables Rockstars, Seesaw, Education City, Scratch, Bug Club and Spelling Shed login and these resources can be used at home to encourage further learning.  Please support your child in using the following websites:
