Heronswood Primary School and Pre-School
Our class teacher is Miss Weston. Our teaching assistants are Miss Gregg, Mrs Childe, Mrs Hill, Miss Burkett and Miss Smith. Miss Sutton teaches the class on a Thursday morning.
In our class the rules and expectations are built around the STARS Values.
English Information
Reading is crucial in everything that children do. We aim to nurture a love of reading and encourage children to read a wide range of texts. We monitor children’s reading at home through the Home School Diaries. It is a whole school expectation that children read at least five times per week at home - please remember to sign diaries once children have read and we will change their books. We teach reading through Phonics lessons every day and guided reading sessions focus on developing comprehension skills. Children will bring home two books for the week - books are changed once a week.
Maths Information
The focus of mathematics teaching in Year 1 is to ensure that children become increasingly fluent with whole numbers – working numbers between 0 to 20, and being able to count forwards and backwards to 100. Also including recalling number facts to 10 and the concept of place value. This should ensure that children develop efficient visual representation of what numbers look like and what is there value. Children should also develop their ability to solve a range of problems and develop mathematical reasoning. By the end of Year 1, pupils should be able to count fluently in groups of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and be able to use these in a variety of situations.
PE and Kit Information
Our PE day is a Thursday. On Thursdays children need to come to school wearing their PE kits. They also need to wear or bring appropriate Forest School clothing for Outdoor Learning on Thursday afternoon.
The children need navy shorts, white polo shirt, white socks, navy joggers, navy jumper (this can be their school jumper) and trainers. (Please note: sun hats will be needed during the summer)
Homework
Reading remains a priority and we expect the children to read at least 5 times a week with an adult. Work on Seesaw encourages the children to complete their homework independently.
Unlocking Learning
All children have a NumBots, Phonics Bug and Education City login and this resource can be used at home to encourage further learning. Please support your child in using the following websites:
